In conjunction with the announcement of a new series of expedition yachts known as the FLEXPLORER, Italian shipyard Cantiere delle Marche also announced that the first 40-metre hull – expedition yacht AURELIA – is currently being built for an expected delivery in 2020.
Cruising profile of the Flexplorer yacht
The exterior design comes from Sergio Cutolo from Hydro Tec, and one of the most notable new features on board in comparison to previous explorer yacht series from the yard is the convertible main deck, where the A-crane can be concealed away and the bulwarks fold flat to become a 115m2/1238ft2 infinity deck. Sun loungers, chaise-sofas and a bar with a wall-mounted widescreen TV turn the area into a spacious party and relaxation area with bimini shades available to keep off the sun.
The tenders and toys are concealed below deck, and can be launched and retrieved using the A-crane which can lift up to 2.5 tonnes.
Guests have the option to dine alfresco on the upper deck aft or the more casual setting on the foredeck, and both proffer sweeping views of the surroundings.
Fantastic beach club
A final sunbathing spot can be found on the sundeck, where a large sunpad can be found to both sides of the inviting Jacuzzi.
The accommodation can sleep 10-12 guests across five cabins with two Pullman beds available, while a crew of five will be on hand to ensure that everything runs smoothly throughout the journey.

Enter Steve Killing, whose progressive experience ranges from 1960s yacht design to the ultra-modern hull and keel designs of America’s Cup vessels. Working closely with Beau Lake’s fibreglass builder, the growing team developed a tunnel hull (which uses two planing hulls with a solid centre that traps air) as well as the drive mechanism, which presented the challenge of transferring pedal energy into a propeller movement that would be silent, highly efficient, and eco-friendly. An electric version will also be available in the spring of 2019.

“When I think about Paul, I remember a passionate man who held his family and friends dear. I also remember a brilliant technologist and philanthropist who wanted to accomplish great things, and did.” – Bill Gates
Underwater research and exploration was one particular field which received Paul Allen’s interest, and he commissioned the 126m/414ft mega yacht OCTOPUS from Lurssen which was launched in 2003. Featuring exterior styling from Espen Oeino and interiors by Johnathan Quinn Barnett, M/Y OCTOPUS remains one of the world’s largest luxury yachts, providing a wealth of onboard amenities while also conducting research and expeditions that have led to discoveries such as the legendary WWII Japanese battleship MUSASHI.

The 76m/250ft research vessel PETREL also saw new life after she was extensively converted from a pipeline inspection vessel to oceanographic exploration, discovering the WWII warships ARTIGLIERE and INDIANAPOLIS in March 2017 and November 2017 respectively.
Paul Allen was an accomplished musician. Seen here playing the guitar
Paul Allen‘s impact will continue to live on through Vulcan Inc., which was co-founded with his sister Jody Allen in 1988. She describes his personality and positive influence on those around him:
“My brother was a remarkable individual on every level. While most knew Paul Allen as a technologist and philanthropist, for us he was a much-loved brother and uncle, and an exceptional friend.

“Paul’s family and friends were blessed to experience his wit, warmth, his generosity and deep concern. For all the demands on his schedule, there was always time for family and friends. At this time of loss and grief for us – and so many others – we are profoundly grateful for the care and concern he demonstrated every day.”
