The 43m/142ft sailing yacht CANOVA from Baltic Yachts is currently on schedule for a delivery in Spring 2019 and she will become the world’s first superyacht to be installed with the Dynamic Stability System (DSS), which effortlessly deploys a 9m/29.6ft long aft foil at the touch of a button, resulting in greater speed and stability as well as reduced pitch.
Sailing yacht CANOVA under construction at Baltic Yachts – rendering
Her naval architecture is produced by Farr Yacht Design, who have an established relationship with the shipyard, and composite engineering experts Gurit who have the challenge of integrating the foil beneath the Owner’s cabin amidships. Her exteriors and interiors have been designed by Lucio Micheletti (Micheletti & Partners).
To reap the full benefits of the DSS, America’s Cup engineers at BAR Technologies, currently working on Ben Ainslie’s 2021 Cup Campaign, created the four sets of highly specialised bearings that allow the foil to be deployed while sailing at speed. A hydro-electric Harken captive winch with a full capacity of 20 tonnes will handle the projected 140-tonne upward load on the leeward bearings when the foil is being deployed, regardless of the conditions.
Exterior concept images show a clear bow and an aft cockpit providing sheltered cockpit dining as well as a more casual space where guests can relax in the sunshine.
A helm station is placed to either side close to the stern, allowing for excellent views down the walkways.
Little is currently known about the interior, however, she is expected to have a contemporary appearance and is predicted to reach a top speed of 25 knots with 25 knots of wind in flat water. Twin generators and a lithium-ion battery bank will ensure that systems aboard S/Y CANOVA can run for significant periods of time in ‘silent mode’.
CANOVA is due to be launched in spring 2019 to cruise the Mediterranean in the next summer.
